Dateline France–July 10–The price of eggs and oysters

Published July 10th, 2008

I’m in Belle-Ile-en-mer France at the moment, and I had to share this surprising fact.
At today’s rate of exchange (1€ = $1.57) we paid €3.80 euros (approx $5.99) for 6 organic eggs ($1 per egg). We also paid 3€ (appox. $4.71) for 6 oysters (.78 cents per oyster). Eggs cost more than oysters? Does this mean that eggs will become an item de luxe? Should we be eating one boiled egg as a delicacy in a silver egg cup? Will the eating of eggs become the habit of connoiseurs only?

Granted, I’m staying in a region of the Atlantic, the Bay of Byscay, which has some of the biggest oyster beds in the world.

And some of you may detest oysters.

But what a scary example of the global food crisis…
