Haruki Marukami on Creativity

Published October 7th, 2008
Haruki Marukami, the wonderful Japanese writer, said this at the New Yorker Festival, and I think it’s a wonderful point to have made in this age of snarky bloggers and unedited rants both on the Web and in print.

1. Criticizing somebody is fun and easy.

2. Meanwhile, creating something original is very hard.

3. But somebody’s got to do it.

    Eileen,
The point here is that you were raised in a morally and spiritually sound environment and I’m certain you will raise your daughter in that same kind of environment. That is if Bush, McCain, Palin provide a proper framwork. Barrack is about returning to that old paradigm. Or shall I not blame the republicans. I should blame the electorate not Bush, McCain and Palin. It is we the people who elected them. Look in the mirror everyone and think of Eileen’s daughter. Do you think this is the kind of world we want her to grow up in. And of course my little “Favorite” is a metaphor for all of our children.
